Start with the right approval
Qualifications for driving instructors in VIC and QLD.
Completing a training course is one part of the process. You also need the relevant state authority or accreditation before providing instruction that requires it. Check the regulator's current eligibility and accepted qualifications before enrolling.
Victoria: Driving Instructor Authority
Safe Transport Victoria issues the Driving Instructor Authority (DIA). Its application requirements include a recognised training qualification, driver licence eligibility, medical assessment and checks. You need an employee Working with Children Check before teaching students under 18.

Queensland: driver trainer accreditation
Transport and Main Roads requires driver trainer accreditation for paid pre-licence driver training. Applicants must meet licence, approved training and suitability requirements. A blue card is required when providing driver training to children.

Moving interstate? Check the relevant recognition process before teaching in the new state. Vehicle, insurance and child-safety obligations also need to be addressed.

Before joining, ask for the current agreement and discuss how the arrangement would work for your circumstances. A lesson's advertised price is not the same as an instructor's take-home income.

Can I discuss part-time driving instructor work?

How much can I earn as a driving instructor?
There is no single figure that suits every instructor. Earnings depend on completed lessons, the agreed payment terms and your operating costs. Ask for current details and plan for both busy and quieter periods.
Do I need my own training car?
Discuss vehicle arrangements before applying or purchasing a car. HIENZ expects a safe, well-maintained vehicle that meets the applicable requirements; confirm equipment, insurance and other expectations with us.
